SMK Track Career

(1993) Steven was blessed with speed at birth. His family is full of athletes, and Steven has definitely benefited from that. Steven first started showing off his speed in elementary school, participating at the field day running events, at the end of every school year. He ran in the relays and the individual sprinting events with and against his classmates. Kennedy soon went from running in tennis shoes to running in track spikes, when he started running in the summer of 1993 in the Sunnyside part of Houston with a youth track team. He ran the 100m. and the 4x100m. relay with longtime childhood friend Trayshard Sorrell.
(1996) Kennedy continued his track career in the 7th grade, at C. E. King Junior High, running the hurdles and in the sprinting events. In 1996, he ran third leg on the 7th grade boys 4x100m. relay that finished third at the district track meet. He also finished 6th in the 100m. at the North Shore Junior Relays.
(1997) In 1997, Kennedy ran on the 8th grade boys 4x100m. relay that finished 4th at the district track meet. Kennedy ran third leg on the 8th grade boys 4x400 meter relay that finished third at the C. E. King Jr. Relays.
(1998) During his high school track career, Kennedy ran against some of the top hurdlers in the state of Texas like Selim Nurudeen (Olympic Hurdler 2008, 2012) Adrian Mayes (State Champion 110H 2000) Dante Ray (State Champion 110H 2001) Warren Wilson (State Qualifier 2001), Reginald Malvo (State Qualifier 2001) and Limas Sweed (State Qualifier 2003). In his freshman track season at C. E. King High school in 1998, Kennedy specialized in the 300-Meter Hurdles and the 4x400 meter relay. At the St. Thomas track meet in February 1998, along with teammates Trayshard Sorrell, Bashire Copeland, and Justin Curtis, Kennedy won the 4x400 meter relay at the freshman St. Thomas Track Meet. At the Varsity C. E. King Panther Relays in March 1998, Kennedy qualified for the 300-meter hurdles final as a freshman, and finished in 5th place with a time of (44.05), with teammate Sherron Davis finishing in 1st place with a time of (40.6). Kennedy also finished in 3rd place in the 300-meter hurdles at the Magnolia Relays, and in 2nd place in the 300-meter hurdles at the New Caney Relays. Kennedy then followed up that performance, with an amazing victory in the 300-meter hurdles at the St. Thomas Invitational Freshman Track Meet on April 2, 1998, when he won the race with a large winning margin with a time of (43.31), with teammate Bashire Copeland finishing in 2nd place. Kennedy finished his freshman track season by coming in 4th place in the 110-meter hurdles, at the District 22-4A Freshman Track Meet, and anchoring the freshman 4x400 meter relay to a 2nd place finish in district. Kennedy was also part of the Varsity Shuttle Hurdle Relay team.
(1999) In his sophomore track season at C. E. King high school in 1999, at the Crosby Relays, Kennedy finished in 1st place in the 110-meter hurdles, and in 2nd place in the 300-meter hurdles. Kennedy finished in 3rd place in the 110-meter hurdles at the Channelview Relays. At the 21-4A Varsity District Championships, Kennedy finished in 5th place in the 110-meter hurdles (15.46) and also ran anchor leg for the Varsity 4x400 meter relay team. Kennedy was also part of the Shuttle Hurdle Relay team.
(2000) In Steven's Junior track season in 2000, Kennedy had a breakout year in Track. He started off the season finishing in 2nd place at the Trinity Valley Relays, on February 26th 2000, in the 110-meter hurdles final with a time of (14.90), and ran 3rd leg on the 4x400 meter relay that finished in 3rd place. He also finished in 2nd place in the 110-meter hurdles at the South Houston Relays, and ran 3rd leg on the 4x100m. relay that finished in 2nd place. At the New Caney Eagle Relays, in the 110-meter hurdles, Kennedy finished in 2nd place. At the Friendswood Relays on March 11th, along with teammates Bashire Copeland, Cedric Jackson, and Eric Byrd, Kennedy anchored C. E. King's Shuttle Hurdle Relay team to a victory, with a time of (62.11). At the Friendswood Relays Kennedy also ran a leg on the 4x200 meter relay for C. E. King. Kennedy followed up that performance by anchoring the Shuttle Hurdle Relay team of Bashire Copeland, Cedric Jackson,and Trayshard Sorrell, to another victory at the C. E. King Panther Relays on March 24th,with a time of (64.42). Kennedy then ran 3rd leg on the 4x400 meter relay with teammates Donald Mims, Justin Curtis, and Bashire Copeland, that finished in 3rd place at the C. E. King Panther Relays with a time of (3:31.46). At the Willis Wildkat Relays on April 7, 2000, Kennedy ran 3rd leg on the 4x400 meter relay with teammates Donald Mims, Chris Watley, and Bashire Copeland, that finished in 2nd place with a time of (3:28.08). Kennedy completed his Junior track season by finishing in 4th place at the 21-4A District Championships on April 13th in the 110-meter hurdles, behind Adrian Mayes, Dante Ray, and Reginald Malvo. Kennedy then went on to run 3rd leg on the 4x400 meter relay with teammates Donald Mims, Cedric Jackson, and Bashire Copeland to finish in 3rd place in the 21-4A District Championships, behind Houston Smiley, and the state champion Houston Forest Brook 4x400 meter relay team of Shamus Lewis, Ivory McCann, Adrian Mayes, and Willie Hordge.
(2001) In Kennedy's final track season at C. E. King High School in 2001, Kennedy picked up where he left off in the 110-meter hurdles. He kicked off his Senior track season by winning 1st place in the 110-meter hurdles at the Oak Ridge War Eagle Relays on February 23, 2001. Kennedy followed that performance up by finishing in 1st place again in the 110-meter hurdles (15.00), at the Dayton Bronco Relays on March 9, 2001. Kennedy then ran against state qualifying hurdler Warren Wilson, and future Olympic Hurdler Selim Nurudeen in the 110-meter hurdles at the C. E. King Panther Relays on March 23, 2001. In that race, against a talented field of hurdlers, and a fast heat, Kennedy finished in 6th place with a time of (14.80). Earlier that same day at the Panther Relays, Kennedy ran 3rd leg on the Shuttle Hurdle Relay with teammates Bashire Copeland, Chris Watley, and Cedric Jackson, that finished in 2nd place (61.54) behind Friendswood HS. Kennedy finished the day at the Panther Relays, by running 3rd leg on the 4x400 meter relay with teammates Michael Campbell, Bashire Copeland, and DeRoyce Pleasant, that finished in 3rd place (3:33.51). At the Brenham BlueBonnet Relays on March 30th, Kennedy finished in 2nd place in the 110-meter hurdles (15.35), behind state qualifying hurdler and future NFL player Limas Sweed. Kennedy finished the day at the BlueBonnet Relays,by running 3rd leg on the 4x400 meter relay with teammates Chris Watley, Bashire Copeland, and DeRoyce Pleasant, that finished in 2nd place (3:31.56). Kennedy completed his track career at C. E. King by finishing in 6th place in the 110-meter hurdles (14.83), at the District 23-4A Championships. He followed that performance by running 3rd leg on the 4x400 meter relay team, that finished in 3rd place, at the District 23-4A Championships. Kennedy completed his track career at C. E. King earning 26 Track Medals. Kennedy was nominated to "Who's Who in Sports" for his 2000 track season, and was named "Co-Most Competitive Runner" along with teammate Bashire Copeland for the 2001 track season. During his high school track career, Kennedy was coached by Bill Owens, and Jim Murillo.
